No Olympics this time around

I might as well kick this one with the Olympic news… I did not get selected for Sochi as I did not meet the criteria. I gave it everything and came close but in the end it just wasn’t enough! Our NZOC criteria is tough…..

Since being here in Europe, we have been racing non stop to try and boost our Olympic chances. I have had a few good results in there which is great to show I can match my points in Europe. But I am definitely after more!

On the snow front, it has finally snowed here in Austria, not a heap but at least it is white outside! The mountains were looking very sick beforehand.

First GS race series in Brigels, SUI. I built throughout the series to score a 23 point result on the second day and move from bib 21 to 11. Happy with that!

Next up was a very bumpy GS track at Filzmoos, AUT. I had a chance to really punch it in there second run but good skiing up top and not so good skiing down bottom, left me with a mediocre result. Promising but I have just got to link all together.

We then headed south to Italy for 4 xGS races at Folgaria and Madonna. Italy has a tonne of snow, it was amazing crossing the border and going from Austrian spring conditions to an Italian winter. Folgaria was a tough series with a very strong field, but plain and simple, I just did not ski well. Dammit!

Madonna we only managed to get one race away due to more new snow but the race was probably the most bizarre race I have ever been to.

First run the snow was soft and I skied ok, sitting in 10th after the top 15 had come down. Then the course crew started to slip the course after every 20…. bib 21 went into first, 23 into 2nd then 42 into 2nd and finally 61 into 1st. (Do you see the trend?) Anyway I ended up 27th after the first run and just went for it second run. I skied wild but managed to carry my speed, winning the run and moving into 7th. But then!!… They decided to slip after every 30 this run instead, and a guy from outside the 30, skied into 5th stealing my second run victory. I ended up 8th, scored a 25 and was the top finisher from the top 15 seed, so it was still a pretty good day for me!

Next up was my first Europa Cup start in Zell Am See, just 20 minutes from our home base here in Saalfelden. I did not qualify for second run which was disappointing but skiing the course with 2 good turns, 1 bad turn is not enough at that level to be fast.

We finished up the racing block with 2 tough races stacked with World Cup racers at Radstadt, AUT and Kirchberg, AUT. I was not happy with my results in these.

I am pretty guttered about the Olympics but I just have to keep my chin up and keep working hard. It has been great to have a couple of days to recuperate and I will go watch the Ski X World Cup not far from here tomorrow. Jamie has qualified again for his 2nd World Cup!

Then it is getting back into the training, and charging into our next races in Germany and Europa Cup speed in Sarntal, ITA!
